Water pump — removal and installation Ford F150
Removal
Warning: Wait until the engine is completely cool before beginning this procedure.
1. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal (see Engine electrical systems).
2. Drain the cooling system (see Tune-up and routine maintenance).
3. Remove the air filter housing and inlet and outlet ducts (see Fuel and exhaust systems).
2.7L engine
4. Remove the charge air cooler outlet pipe (see Fuel and exhaust systems).
Water pump pulley mounting bolts
5. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts (see illustration).
6. Remove the drivebelt (see Tune-up and routine maintenance).
7. Remove the water pump pulley bolts and pulley.
8. Remove the thermostat (see Thermostat – replacement).
Squeeze the clamp and slide it back on the hose, then detach the hose from the water pump
9. Disconnect the hose from the water pump (see illustration).
Water pump mounting bolts
10. Remove the water pump mounting bolts (see illustration), then pull the water pump forward to disconnect the coolant inlet pipe grommet on the backside of the water pump. Take note of the installed positions of the various bolts.
Note: If the water pump sticks, dislodge it with a soft-face hammer or a hammer and a block of wood, then pull the pump forward.
11. Remove the grommet from the coolant intake pipe or back of the water pump.
12. Before installation, remove and clean the mating surface on the front cover (and water pump, if the same pump is to be installed).
13. Inspect the grommet and sealing surface of water pump housing, the front cover and the coolant intake pipe for dirt and/or debris. Clean them thoroughly before reassembly.
Install the new grommet into the back of the pump (even if it had stuck on the coolant pipe)
14. Lubricate the inside and outside of a new grommet with clean antifreeze, then press the grommet (see illustration) into the back side of the pump until the edge is flush with the pump housing.
Make sure the new 0-ring gasket seats properly in the front cover groove
15. Lubricate the new 0-ring gasket with clean antifreeze, then install it into the groove along the front cover sealing surface (see illustration).
16. Verify the dowel pins are still remaining in the front cover.
2.7L engine water pump bolt tightening sequence
17. Install the water pump (see illustration) and tighten the bolts by hand evenly, then tighten the bolts to the torque listed in this Chapter’s Specifications.
3.3L, 3.5L V6 and 5.0L V8 engines
18. Remove the expansion tank mounting bolts and move the tank out of the way without disconnecting the hoses.
19. Disconnect the four hoses to the thermostat housing, then remove the housing bolts and housing from the front cover.
20. If the water pump pulley bolts aren’t too tight, you might be able to loosen them now, using the drivebelt to hold the pulley. If that doesn’t work, you’ll have to hold the pulley with a strap wrench after you remove the drivebelt.
21. Remove the drivebelt (see Tune-up and routine maintenance). Note: Cover the air conditioning compressor drivebelt with kitchen plastic wrap. If coolant gets on the belt it can ruin it.
22. Remove the pulley bolts and remove the pulley. If you were unable to loosen the water pump pulley bolts with the drivebelt installed, use a strap wrench to hold the pulley as you loosen the bolts.
23. Remove the hose retaining clip and disconnect the quick-connect hose from the bottom of the expansion tank and heater hose at the engine.
24. Remove the water pump retaining bolts
and remove the water pump. Take note of the installed positions of the various bolts.
Note: If the water pump sticks, dislodge it with a soft-face hammer or a hammer and a block of wood.
25. Before installation, remove and clean the mating surface on the front cover (and water pump, if the same pump is to be installed).
26. Lubricate a new 0-ring seal with clean antifreeze and install it to the water pump. On 3.5L V6 models also install a new gasket.
27. Install the water pump or water pump and tighten the bolts by hand evenly, then tighten the bolts to the torque listed in this Chapter’s Specifications.
All engines
28. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.
29. Refill the cooling system (see Tune-up and routine maintenance).
30. Start the engine and make sure there are no leaks. Check the level frequently during the first few weeks of operation toensure there are no leaks and that the coolant level is stable.
