Output shaft seal — replacement Ford F150

Note: On 2WD non-Raptor 10-speed transmissions, the output shaft flange is attached using a bolt. On 2WD 6-speed transmissions, the output shaft flange is attached using a nut.

1. Raise and support the vehicle on jackstands.

2. Remove the rear driveshaft (see Driveshaft(s) – removal and installation).

3. On 4WD models, remove the transfer case (see Transfer case – removal and installation).

4. On 2WD models with a bolt-on output shaft flange, mark the flange and output shaft for proper alignment during installation. Remove the nut or bolt and remove the output shaft flange.

Note: On models that use a retaining nut, and additional seal is located under the nut that also requires replacement.

Caution: On 2WD models that use a bolt, a special tool is required to remove the output shaft nut once the flange is removed.

5. On all models, pry out the seal with a screwdriver or a seal removal tool. Don’t damage the seal bore.

6. Lubricate the new seal lips with petroleum jelly.

7. Drive the seal into place with a large socket or section of tubing. The outside diameter of the socket should be slightly smaller than the outside diameter of the seal.

Note: On 4WD 10-speed transmissions, use care when installing the new seal over the output shaft to prevent seal damage.

8. On 2WD models with a bolt-on output shaft flange, line up the marks when installing the output shaft flange.

Caution: On 2WD models that use a bolt, a special tool is required to install and torque the output shaft nut.

9. On all models, installation is reverse of removal. Use a new nut or bolt and for the output shaft flange and tighten to the specifications in this Chapter’s Specifications.

10. On 2WD models with a nut attaching the output shaft flange, stake the nut in two places to prevent it from loosening.

11. Top off the transmission fluid as necessary.
