Shift interlock system — description, check and actuator replacement Ford F150
Description
1. The shift interlock system prevents the shift lever from being moved out of the Park position unless the brake pedal is depressed. The system consists of a Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) solenoid mounted on the steering column or on the shifter assembly in the console. When the ignition key is turned to the Run position, the actuator is energized. When the brake pedal is depressed, the shift lever can be moved from Park.

2. Check the following if the BTSI solenoid isnt working correctly:
- Fuses F18 (5A) in the Body Control Module (BCM) and F55 (40A) in the Battery Junction Box (BJB).
- Brake lights operate when pedal is
Override
Note: The following procedure places the shift lever in Neutral. With the shift lever in neutral, the vehicle can be started and driven.
3. Set the parking brake and turn the ignition off. Remove the key if applicable.
Column mounted shifter
4. Detach the shift lever boot from the column covers by pressing towards the front of the vehicle from the rear of the boot.
Move the brake shift interlock solenoid spindle outward
5. Move the brake shift interlock solenoid spindle outward .
6. With the spindle held outward, press the brake pedal and move the shift lever to Neutral.
Console mounted shifter
7. Remove the rubber insert in the tray between the shift lever and cup holders.
8. Carefully pry the access cover off and remove.
9. Use a suitable tool to push the brake shift interlock solenoid lever forward.
10. With the spindle held forward, press the brake pedal and move the shift lever to Neutral.
Actuator replacement
Column mounted shifter
11. Remove the steering column covers (see Body).
12. Remove the shift lever mechanism (see Shift lever – removal and installation).
Remove the BTSI solenoid bolt
13. Remove the BTSI solenoid bolt.
Pry out the BTSI solenoid clip…
… and remove the BTSI solenoid
14. Carefully pry out the BTSI solenoid clip and pull the BTSI solenoid from the shift lever mechanism .
Press in on the spring-loaded pin for the park position switch
15. Press the spring loaded pin for the park position switch and rotate the switch clockwise to remove.
16. Remove the BTSI solenoid and park position switch from the shift lever mechanism.
17. Installation is the reverse of removal.
Console mounted shifter
18. The BTSI solenoid is part of the shift lever assembly and not serviceable separately. If the BTSI actuator requires replacement, the shift lever assembly must be replaced. See Shift lever – removal and installation.
