Cable-actuated parking brake — component replacement Ford F150
Warning: Dust created by the brake system is harmful to your health. Never blow it out with compressed air and don’t inhale any of it. An approved filtering mask should be worn when working on the brakes. Do not, under any circumstances, use petroleum-based solvents to clean brake parts. Use brake system cleaner only.
Parking brake shoes —replacement
1. Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the wheels. Be sure to block the front tires.
2. Release the parking brake completely.
3. Have an assistant pull down on the parking brake cable from underneath the vehicle while you hold the parking brake pedal to its highest point. Insert a 4 mm Allen wrench or a 5/32 drill bit into the hole just behind the parking brake lever arm. This will hold the pedal up with the tension off of the cable (see illustrations).
7.3a Have an assistant pull the cable down as you install the 4 mm Allen wrench in the lock-out hole just behind the parking brake lever arm
7.3b Place the 4 mm Allen wrench here to lock the pedal in place
4. Remove the brake discs (see Brake disc – inspection, removal and installation).
5. Clean the parking brake assembly with brake system cleaner before beginning any work. Follow illustrations 7.5a through 7.5m for replacement of the parking brake shoes. Be sure to stay in order and read the caption under each illustration.

6. Clean the brake disc/parking brake drum and check it for score marks, deep grooves, hard spots (which will appear as small discolored areas) and cracks. If the disc/drum is worn, scored or out-of-round, it can be resurfaced by an automotive machine shop.
7. After the shoes have been installed, turn the adjusting screw so the disc just fits over the new shoes. When the disc is installed, the shoes should not rub as the disc is turned. If you have a brake shoe adjusting gauge, adjust the diameter of the shoes to 0.02-inch less than that of the drum surface of the rear brake disc.
8. Repeat this procedure for the other parking brake assembly.
9. Install the brake discs (see Brake disc – inspection, removal and installation).
10. Remove the rubber plug from the brake backing plate and, using a screwdriver or brake adjusting tool, turn the adjusting screw star wheel until the parking brake shoes start to drag as the disc is turned, then back off the star wheel until the shoes don’t drag.
11. Remove the 4 mm Allen wrench from the parking brake lever.
12. Install the rear wheels and lug nuts, lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts to the torque listed in the Tune-up and routine maintenance Specifications.
Parking brake cable — replacement
Note: The parking brake cable system consists of three parts: An LH and an RH cable, and a front cable. The front cable is removed with the parking brake lever.
13. Release the tension on the parking brake cables by having a helper pull down on the cable while you insert the Allen wrench into the locking hole as described in Step 3.
14. Press inward on the tabs securing the cable to the brake shoe actuator lever, then pull the cable free from the bracket.
15. Pull the tension spring back far enough to slip the cable end off of the parking brake control lever, then remove the cable.
16. Disconnect the cable from the equalizer bracket (where the LH and RH cables join together).
17. Press inward on the tabs that secure the cable to the frame bracket, then pull the cable free.
18. Snap open the plastic cable retainers and separate the LH and RH cables.
19. If you’re removing the RH cable, remove the parking brake cable bracket bolt.
20. Installation is the reverse of removal.
