Ignition coils — removal and installation Ford F150

Removal

2.7L models

1. Remove the two nuts at the front of the engine cover. Lift up at the front and unhook the retainers at the rear of the cover to remove.

2. Disconnect the harness retainers from the coil fastener studs.

3. When working on the passenger (right) side ignition coils, disconnect the right Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) connector. See Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor – replacement.

A) Connector with lock
B) Coil bolt/stud

4. Slide the connector locks away from the coils to disengage and disconnect the connectors from the coils

Note: Use compressed air to clear the ignition coil and surrounding area of debris prior to removing the coils.

5. Remove the bolt/stud securing the ignition coil.

6. Pull the coil from the upper spark plug using a twisting motion to remove it from the cylinder head

3.3L Duratec and 3.5L and 5.0L models

7. Remove the engine cover.

8. On 3.5L non-turbo models, when working on the passenger (right) side ignition coils, the upper intake manifold must be removed. See Intake manifold(s) – removal and installation.

9. On 2016 and earlier 3.5L turbo models, remove the high-pressure fuel pump insulator cover retainer and the cover from the left rear of the engine. Disconnect the high-pressure fuel pump electrical connector.

10. 3.3L Duratec and 3.5L turbo models, disconnect the crankcase ventilation tube from the front of the driver’s side (left) valve cover and disconnect the electrical connector. Position the tube out of the way to allow access to the ignition coils.

11. On all models, disconnect the ignition coil electrical connectors.

Note: Use compressed air to clear the ignition coil and surrounding area of debris prior to removing the coils.

12. On all models, remove the bolt securing the ignition coil, then pull the coil from the upper spark plug using a twisting motion to remove it from the cylinder head.

Installation

13. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure with the following additions:

  1. Prior to installing the coil, coat the interior of the rubber boot with silicone dielectric compound.
  2. Connect each coil electrical connector to its correct coil and make sure they are tight and secure.
