Rear main oil seal — replacement Ford F150

Note: The crankshaft rear seal and retainer must be replaced as an assembly, the seal cannot be replaced separately.

1. Remove the transmission (see Automatic transmission).

2. Remove the driveplate (see Driveplate – removal and installation) then remove the crankshaft sensor ring from the end of the crankshaft.

3. Disconnect the crankshaft sensor electrical connector, then remove the crankshaft sensor mounting bolts and the sensor from the seal housing (see Emissions and engine control systems).

4. Remove the oil pan-to-seal housing bolts.

5. Remove the seal retainer mounting bolts and the retainer from the rear of the engine.

6. Use only a plastic gasket scraper or putty knife to remove all traces of old gasket material and sealant from the pan and engine block.

Caution: To prevent an oil leak after the new seal is installed, be very careful not to scratch or otherwise damage the crankshaft sealing surface or the engine block.

7. Remove all traces of RTV sealant. Apply a 3/16-inch bead of high performance RTV along the sealing surfaces of the retainer where the block and oil pan flanges meet.

8. Apply a film of clean engine oil to the lips of the new seal and around the crankshaft where the seal makes contact.

9. Install the retainer assembly to the engine at an angle, with the bottom of the retainer touching the oil pan, tilt the retainer up and onto the rear of the cylinder block then install all the bolts within 10 minutes of applying the sealant.

11. On 3.3L Duratec and 3.5L engines, install the seal retainer-to-engine block bolts first, then tighten the bolts, in sequence to the torque listed in this Chapter’s Specifications, then install the oil pan-toseal retainer bolts and tighten the bolts to the torque listed in this Chapter’s Specifications.

12. Reinstall the crankshaft sensor (see Emissions and engine control systems), the crankshaft sensor ring and the driveplate, making sure the crankshaft sensor ring is between the crankshaft and the driveplate.

13. Reinstall the transmission (see Automatic transmission).
