Exhaust manifolds — removal and installation Ford F150

Removal

1. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal (see Engine electrical systems).

2. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove tire from the appropriate side then the inner splash shield from the fenderwell (see Body).

3. Remove the skid plates and splash shields, if equipped.

4. Working under the vehicle, apply penetrating oil to the exhaust pipe-to-manifold studs and nuts (they’re usually corroded or rusty).

5. Remove the air intake duct and the air filter housing cover (see Fuel and exhaust systems).

6. Remove the exhaust manifold heat bolts and remove the heat shield from the manifold.

7. Remove the catalytic converter nutsfrom the exhaust manifold, loosen the converter pipe clamp at the exhaust pipe, then detach the converter from the manifold.

8. Remove the eight mounting nuts from the exhaust manifold and remove the exhaust manifold.

9. Remove the exhaust manifold heat shield bolts and remove the heat shield from the manifold.

10. Remove the catalytic converter nuts from the exhaust manifolds and move the catalytic converter assemblies to the rear of the vehicle (see Emissions and engine control systems).

11. Remove the eight mounting nuts from the exhaust manifold and remove the exhaust manifold.

Installation

12. The manufacturer recommends that, when an exhaust manifold is removed, all exhaust manifold studs be removed and discarded and replaced with new studs and new nuts. Use a little anti-seize on the studs, and tighten the new studs to the torque listed in this Chapter’s Specifications.

13. Inspect the exhaust manifolds for cracks. If you’re using the old exhaust manifold studs, make sure the stud threads are clean and undamaged. The exhaust manifold and cylinder head mating surfaces must be clean before the exhaust manifolds are reinstalled — use a gasket scraper to remove all carbon deposits.

14. Position a new gasket in place and slip the exhaust manifold over the studs on the cylinder head. Install the mounting nuts. When tightening the mounting nuts, work from the center outwards, alternating between top and bottom rows. Tighten the bolts in two steps to the torque values listed in this Chapter’s Specifications.

15. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.
