Oil pan — removal and installation Ford F150

Removal

1. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal (see Engine electrical systems).

2. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands.

6. Remove the front crossmember (see illustration).

7. On 4WD models, support the front differential with a floor jack and chain the differential to the jack, then remove the front axle support bushing bolts and lower the front axle. Make sure that no vacuum lines or wiring are stretched while lowering or raising the front axle.

8. Remove the fasteners for the transmission cooler line brackets and secure the cooler lines out of the way.

9. Disconnect the wiring harness retainers attached to the oil pan rail and move the harnesses out of the way.

i.10 Remove the bolts from around the perimeter of the oil

10. Remove the oil pan mounting bolts (see illustration).

11. Carefully separate the oil pan from the engine block. Don’t pry between the engine block and oil pan or damage to the sealing surfaces may result and oil leaks could develop. Instead, dislodge the oil pan with a large rubber mallet or a wood block and a hammer.

Installation

12. Use only a plastic gasket scraper or putty knife to remove all traces of old gasket material and sealant from the pan and engine block.

Caution: Be careful not to gouge the oil pan or block, or oil leaks could develop later.

13. Clean the mating surfaces with RTV gasket remover. Make sure the bolt holes in the engine block are clean.

14. Apply a bead of RTV sealant to the four corner seams where the rear seal retainer meets the engine block, and where the front cover meets the engine block (see illustration).

Caution: You must work fast to secure the oil pan to the engine within 5 minutes of applying the RTV

i.15 Oil pan bolt tightening sequence

15. Carefully position the oil pan against the engine block and install the bolts finger-tight. Make sure the gaskets haven’t shifted, then tighten the bolts in sequence (see illustration) to the torque listed in this Chapter’s Specifications. Start at the center of the oil pan and work out toward the ends in a spiral pattern.

16. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.

Caution: Allow at least 90 minutes for the RTV to dry, then refill the engine with oil before starting it (see Tune-up and routine maintenance).

17. Start the engine and check carefully for oil leaks at the oil pan. Drive the vehicle and check again.
