Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) variable force solenoid — removal and installation Ford F150
Note: The Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) variable force solenoid supplies force to actuate the VCT oil control valve. The engine is equipped with four VCTs. The PCM sends a signal based on engine speed and load, and the solenoid moves the VCT oil control valve to advance or retard or hold position. The camshaft is then re-positioned in relation to crankshaft timing to allow for optimum engine performance with lower emissions and reduced fuel consumption. A problem in the VCT sensor circuit will set a diagnostic trouble code.
Note: On 2.7L models, the VCTs are located on the top of the heads at the front of the engine. On 3.3L Duratec, 3.5L and 5.0L models, the VCTs are located under the valve covers, in the heads at the front of the engine.
1. On 2.7L models, remove the two nuts at the front of the engine cover. Lift up at the front and unhook the retainers at the rear of the cover to remove.

2. On all models, locate and disconnect the VCT solenoid connectors
3. On 3.3L, 3.5L and 5.0L models, remove the valve cover for the solenoid to removed (see Valve covers – removal and installation or Valve covers – removal and installation).
4. Unscrew the bolt and remove the VCT from the cylinder head.
5. Installation is reverse of removal. Tighten the bolts to the torque listed in this Chapter’s Specifications.
