Alternator — removal and installation Ford F150

1. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal (see Battery – disconnection and reconnection).

Removal

2.7L, 3.3L and 3.5L (non-turbo) models

2. On 2.7L models, remove the pipe between the turbocharger inlet ducts and the air filter housing (see Fuel and exhaust systems).

3. On 3.5L models, remove the air filter housing (see Fuel and exhaust systems).

4. On 3.3L models, remove the air cleaner outlet pipe.

5. On all models, remove the drivebelt (see Tune-up and routine maintenance).

6. On 2.7L models, disconnect the quick-connect fitting for turbocharger bypass tube from under the inlet tube.

7. Disconnect the electrical connector and the B+ cable from the alternator

8. Remove the upper nut and lower bolt attaching the alternator to the bracket.

9. Remove the alternator from the vehicle.

3.5L turbocharged models

10. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands.

11. On 2016 and earlier models, remove the two nuts at the front of the engine cover. Lift up at the front and unhook the retainers at the rear of the cover to remove.

12. Disconnect the Intake Air Temperature Sensor (IAT) (see Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor – replacement).

13. Detach the coolant reservoir hose from the intake duct.

14. Remove the pipe between the turbocharger inlet ducts and the air filter housing (see Air filter housing – removal and installation).

15. Disconnect the quick-connect fitting for turbocharger bypass tube from under the driver’s (left) inlet tube. Disconnect the four quick-connect fittings on top of the inlet tube.

16. Loosen the clamp for the driver’s (left) inlet tube at the turbocharger and remove the inlet tube.

Note: The clamp can be accessed through the inner fender liner on the driver’s side front.

17. On 2016 and earlier models, loosen the clamps at both the turbo and intercooler and remove the turbocharger outlet tube.

18. Remove the under vehicle cover and/or skid plate (as equipped).

19. Disconnect the quick-connect fitting for the turbocharger bypass tube from under the vehicle.

20. Remove the drivebelt (see Check the engine drivebelt).

21. Remove the nut and remove the B+ cable from the alternator (see illustration 6).

22. Disconnect the electrical connector from the alternator.

23. Remove the upper nut and lower bolt attaching the alternator to the bracket (see illustration 7).

Note: It may be necessary to also remove the stud for the alternator mounting nut to remove the alternator.

24. Remove the alternator from the vehicle.

5.0L models

25. Remove the drivebelt (see Check the engine drivebelt).

26. Remove the bolt and remove the drive-belt tensioner assembly.

27. Remove the nut and remove the B+ cable from the alternator (see illustration 6).

28. Disconnect the electrical connector from the alternator.

29. Remove the two lower mounting bolts and separate the alternator from the engine.

30. Remove the bolts attaching the alternator to the bracket.

31. Remove the alternator from the vehicle.

Installation

32. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten fasteners to the torque listed in this Chapter’s Specifications.

33. Install the drivebelt and reconnect the cable to the negative terminal of the battery.
