Fuel and exhaust systems Ford F150
Fuel system warnings
Warning: Gasoline is extremely flammable and repairing fuel system components can be dangerous. Consider your automotive repair knowledge and experience before attempting repairs, which may be better suited for a professional mechanic.
- Don’t smoke or allow open flames or bare light bulbs near the work area
- Don’t work in a garage with a gas-type appliance (water heater, clothes dryer)
- Use fuel-resistant gloves. If any fuel spills on your skin, wash it off immediately with soap and water
- Clean up spills immediately
- Do not store fuel-soaked rags where they could ignite
- Prior to disconnecting any fuel line, you must relieve the fuel pressure (see Fuel pressure relief procedure)
- Wear safety glasses
- Have a proper fire extinguisher on hand
Fuel system
1. This Chaptercovers the removal and installation procedures for the important parts of the air intake, fuel and exhaust systems. Because emission control systems are integral parts of the engine management system, there are many cross-references to Emissions and engine control systems. Information on the engine management system, information sensors and output actuators is also in Emissions and engine control systems.
2. The air intake system consists of the air filter housing, the air intake duct, the throttle body, and the intake manifold. Incoming air passes through the air filter element, the air intake duct, the throttle body, the intake manifold plenum and the intake manifold runners before being mixed with fuel sprayed into the intake ports by the fuel injectors.
3. The Sequential Fuel Injection (SFI) system consists of the fuel tank, a 2-speed electric fuel pump/fuel level sending unit module mounted inside the tank, the fuel pressure regulator (integral with the fuel pump module), a fuel pump flow control module, the fuel rail, the fuel injectors, and the metal and flexible fuel lines that connect the various components of the SFI system. 2017 and earlier 3.5L non-turbo and 5.0L models are equipped with the SFI system.
4. The Direct Injection (DI) system consists of the fuel tank, a 2-speed electric fuel pump/fuel level sending unit module mounted inside the tank, a fuel pressure regulator (integral with the fuel pump module), a fuel pump flow control module (FPCM) located on the frame rail above the rear of the fuel tank, a hi-pressure fuel pump, fuel rail, fuel injectors, and metal and flexible fuel lines that connect the various components of the DI system. 2017 and earlier model 2.7L engines are equipped with the DI system.
All 3.5L turbocharged engines, and 2018 and later 2.7L engines, 3.3L engines and 5.0L engines are equipped with both an SFI and a DI fuel injection system.
5. The lifetime fuel filter is part of the fuel pump module and is not serviceable.
6. Fuel is circulated from the fuel pump to the fuel rail through fuel lines running along the underside of the vehicle. Various sections of the fuel line are either rigid metal or nylon, or flexible fuel hose. The various sections of the fuel hose are connected either by quick-connect fittings or threaded metal fittings.
Exhaust system
7. The exhaust system consists of the exhaust manifold, catalytic converter, muffler, tailpipe and all connecting pipes, flanges and clamps. The catalytic converter is an emission control device added to the exhaust system to reduce pollutants.
