1. The transmission is a fully automatic, electronic-shift six-speed or 10-speed (some 2017 and later models) with a lock-up torque converter, known as a torque converter clutch, or TCC (the TCC provides a direct connection between the engine and the drive wheels for improved efficiency and fuel economy) and has selectable Tow/Haul mode and manual up/down shift features.

2. On 6-speed transmissions, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) controls the transmission electronic functions. There is not a separate Transmission Control Module (TCM). On vehicles with auto stop/start, the transmission is equipped with an auxiliary pump on the passenger side of the case. This pump is used to maintain line pressure during shut-down on auto stop/ start models.

3. On 10-speed models, a separate TCM controls the transmission electronic functions.

4. The transmission fluid dipstick is located under the vehicle on the right front side of the transmission. The dipstick is used to check fluid level and add fluid in the same fashion as a dipstick with a tube that is accessed through the engine compartment.

5. Because of the complexity of the clutches and the electronic and hydraulic control systems, and because of the special tools and expertise needed to overhaul an automatic transmission, diagnosis and repair of this transmission must be handled by a dealer service department or a transmission repair shop. The procedures in this Chapter are limited to general diagnosis, routine maintenance and adjustment: replacing the shift lever, replacing and adjusting the shift cable, and similar jobs. Serious repair work, however, must be done by a transmission specialist. But if the transmission must be rebuilt or replaced, you can save money by removing and installing it yourself, so instructions for that procedure are included as well.

Note: Perform on a level road surface. The engine and transmission must be at normal operating temperature. Ensure the transmission fluid is at the correct level.

6. Check for the presence of any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) stored in the PCM (see Emissions and engine control systems). If any DTCs are stored, write them down and clear them.

7. Warm the engine and transmission to operating temperature.

8. With the transmission in Drive (D), accelerate moderately from a stop to 50 mph). Make sure the transmission shifts into 6th gear. With the transmission in in 6th gear, maintain vehicle speed and throttle position for a minimum of 15 seconds.

9. While maintaining a steady speed and throttle in 6th gear, lightly apply and release the brake to operate stop lights. Maintain the current speed and throttle position for a minimum of 5 seconds.

10. When safe, bring the vehicle to a complete stop and remain at idle with the transmission in Drive (D) and foot on the brake pedal for a minimum of 20 seconds.

11. Repeat steps 8, 9 and 10 an additional five times.

10-speed transmissions

12. Accelerate from a stop with about 15-percent throttle. Use care to make sure that the 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 4-5, 5-6, 6-7, 7-8 shifts occur between 1300-1600 rpm.

13. Continue to accelerate (you can apply more throttle after the 7-8 upshift) until the vehicle reaches 55 mph and 8-9 and 9-10 shifts are made.

14. When safe, bring the vehicle to a complete stop and remain at idle with the transmission in Drive (D) and foot on the brake pedal for a minimum of 5 seconds.

15. Shift to Neutral (N) then to Reverse (R).

16. Repeat steps 11, 12, 13 and 14 an additional six (6) times.
